There are plenty of lists of business loan types. This one is ordered by something most owners care about when they’re searching at 10pm: how quickly each option can realistically put money in the account. Every type below has a place. The right one depends on what you need the money for, what you can offer as security and how clean your paperwork is.

What types of business loan are there in New Zealand?

Business.govt.nz lists a broad range of funding — from asset finance and cash-flow loans to secured loans, lines of credit and trade finance. For a business that needs funds quickly, these are the practical options:

Which option is fastest?

Small unsecured amounts. No valuation, no lawyers, decision based on bank statements. Same-day funding is possible for smaller amounts when documents arrive quickly.

Property-secured, clean title. When equity is strong and the title is simple, $20k to $250k is possible same day and up to $5m is possible within 24 to 48 hours.

Everything else depends on third parties: a valuer, an existing lender’s payout figure, a customer’s invoice history or an equipment dealer’s paperwork.

How do I choose between secured and unsecured?

Ask three questions:

  1. How much? Above what your bank statements can support unsecured, property usually becomes necessary.
  2. How long? Short gaps suit unsecured or caveat-style lending; longer needs suit mortgage-secured options.
  3. What can I offer? If you have property equity and a clean title, secured options open up larger amounts.

What about bad credit or IRD debt?

Both are considered case by case. Property security often makes the biggest difference. See bad credit business loans and business loans to pay IRD.

Why don’t you show interest rates?

Because every loan is priced on the business’s own situation — the security, the term, the risk and the purpose. A published “from” figure would mislead most readers. The specialist will explain the full cost once they understand what you need, before you commit to anything.

How do non-bank lenders compare with banks?

Banks are a natural first stop for many New Zealand businesses, and business.govt.nz encourages owners to build a relationship with their bank early. But banks can take longer, ask for more paperwork and decline situations that don’t fit their policies — IRD arrears, a recent bad patch, a newer business or an urgent deadline.

Non-bank lenders fill that gap. They tend to:

  • decide faster, with fewer layers of sign-off;
  • look at the whole story rather than a single score;
  • consider IRD debt and past credit issues case by case;
  • lean more on property security and less on long trading histories.

The trade-off is that short-term non-bank funding is usually designed to be repaid or refinanced sooner, so a clear exit plan matters. Many businesses use a fast non-bank loan to get through a deadline, then move to a bank once accounts are finished or the situation settles.

Where should I start if I’m unsure?

Start with the deadline and work backwards. If funds are needed within a day, smaller unsecured or property-secured options with clean paperwork are the realistic routes. If you have a week, more options open up. The first call will narrow it down quickly.

Illustrative example: one business, three options

Illustrative only. A Palmerston North wholesaler needs $200,000. Its statements support about $80,000 unsecured. The director has substantial equity in a commercial unit with a modest bank mortgage. The options discussed: $80,000 unsecured now plus a line of credit; or a $200,000 second mortgage possible within 24 to 48 hours; or invoice finance against its large debtor book. The second mortgage fits the deadline and amount best.

Not sure which loan fits your clock?

How much can a New Zealand business borrow?
