Quick answer
Since 26 May 2023, everyday electronic payments between the main New Zealand banks — direct credits, automatic payments and bill payments — can go through on weekends and public holidays. That helps unsecured funds land outside the working week. Property settlements and other high-value transactions still follow business days, and lawyers, valuers and registries keep business hours. Plan secured deals around working days and start early in the week.
Key points
- Everyday bank payments now process every day of the year between participating banks.
- High-value transactions such as property settlements still run on business days.
- New Zealand has 11 national public holidays, plus regional anniversary days.
- If your deadline is a Monday, act on Wednesday, not Friday.
- 7-day payments since
- 26 May 2023
- Still business days
- Property settlements
- National public holidays

Money problems don’t keep office hours. A supplier wants a deposit on Saturday morning, a long weekend lands right before payroll, or a deal surfaces on Christmas Eve. The good news is that New Zealand’s payment system now works every day. The catch is that not everything else does. Knowing the difference lets you plan which parts of a deal can happen over a weekend and which have to wait.
What changed with 7-day payments?
On 26 May 2023, Payments NZ announced that electronic payments between participating banks could be processed on weekends and public holidays. Before that, a payment made on a Saturday often didn’t arrive until Monday.
The change covers the everyday payment types most businesses use:
- direct credits, such as a lender paying funds into your account;
- automatic payments;
- direct debits;
- bill payments.
Participating banks listed at launch were ANZ, ASB, Bank of China, BNZ, Citi, HSBC, ICBC, Kiwibank, TSB and Westpac. For an unsecured business loan approved on a Friday evening or Saturday, it means the money can potentially land the same day rather than waiting for Monday.
What still waits for a business day?
Payments NZ was clear that high-value transactions such as house settlements continue to follow the five-business-day model. In practice, several parts of a secured business loan are still tied to the working week:
| Step | Weekend? |
|---|---|
| Your enquiry and first call | Often possible |
| Reviewing bank statements | Often possible |
| Everyday electronic payment of unsecured funds | Yes, between participating banks |
| Registered valuer inspection | Rarely |
| Lawyers’ advice and certificates | Rarely |
| Property settlement and registration | Business days |
So a property-secured loan started on a Friday afternoon will normally settle the following week. Our page on lawyers and settlement explains why.
Which public holidays should I plan around?
Employment New Zealand lists 11 national public holidays. For 2026 they include New Year’s Day and the day after (1 and 2 January), Waitangi Day (6 February), Good Friday (3 April), Easter Monday (6 April), Anzac Day (Saturday 25 April, observed on Monday 27 April by many workers), King’s Birthday (1 June), Matariki (10 July), Labour Day (26 October), Christmas Day (25 December) and Boxing Day (Saturday 26 December, observed on Monday 28 December by many workers).
In 2027, Matariki falls on Friday 25 June and Labour Day on Monday 25 October. Regional anniversary days add more closures — Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury and others each have their own.
The end of the year needs special care. Between Christmas and the middle of January many lawyers, accountants and valuers close or run skeleton teams. If you can see a January cash crunch coming, the time to act is November. Our guide to the summer shutdown covers the full December–January picture.
How do I plan a deadline that falls after a weekend?
Work backwards. If something must be paid on a Tuesday after a long weekend:
- Wednesday or Thursday before: enquire, have the first call, send documents.
- Thursday: indicative or conditional decision; book any lawyer.
- Friday: clear conditions; settle secured loans if possible.
- Saturday to Monday: unsecured funds may still move by everyday transfer if approved.
- Tuesday: the payment goes out.
If you’re reading this on a Friday night with a Tuesday deadline, it’s still worth enquiring now. An unsecured option may still fit, and at worst you’ll know first thing on the next working day exactly where you stand.
What about tax deadlines that land on weekends?
Inland Revenue generally moves a due date that falls on a weekend or public holiday to the next working day. Its 7 February page noted that because 7 February 2026 was a Saturday, the deadline became Monday 9 February 2026. Don’t rely on this to buy time if you’re already behind — check the exact date in myIR. If a tax bill is the reason you need funds, see our page on business loans to pay IRD.
How do I keep a weekend deal moving?
A few habits make weekend funding far more likely to work:
- Enquire before Friday lunchtime if you can. It leaves the afternoon for documents and a decision while everyone is still at their desks.
- Send everything at once. Weekend assessment is easier when nothing has to be chased.
- Check your own bank. Make sure the account the funds are going to is with a bank that processes 7-day payments, and that the account details on the form are exact.
- Tell the people you owe. If a supplier knows funds are arriving Saturday, they’re more likely to release goods on Monday morning.
Illustrative example: a long weekend in Wellington
Illustrative only. A Wellington events company needs $35,000 to pay crew on the Tuesday after Labour Day weekend. The owner enquires on the Thursday, sends statements that afternoon and receives an unsecured approval on Friday. Funds land in the business account on the Saturday through an everyday transfer, and payroll runs on time. A property-secured option had also been discussed but would not have settled until the Tuesday itself — too late to be useful.
Looking at a weekend or holiday deadline?
Tell us the date, the amount and whether property is available, and we’ll tell you what can realistically move before then. Enquiring takes about a minute and there’s no credit check when you first enquire. Your details stay with our team, not a list of other lenders, and a real person calls you — evenings included where we can. Give us the true deadline so we can plan around the calendar properly.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a business loan paid on a Saturday?
Smaller unsecured amounts approved before or during the weekend may be paid by everyday electronic transfer, which now processes on weekends between participating banks. Property-secured loans normally settle on the next business day.
Which banks take part in weekend payments?
Payments NZ listed ANZ, ASB, Bank of China, BNZ, Citi, HSBC, ICBC, Kiwibank, TSB and Westpac when 7-day processing started in 2023.
Do public holidays affect IRD due dates?
When a tax due date falls on a weekend or public holiday, Inland Revenue generally moves it to the next working day. For example, 7 February 2026 fell on a Saturday, so that payment date moved to Monday 9 February 2026.
Does my regional anniversary day matter?
It can. Lawyers and some businesses close for regional anniversary days, which can affect a settlement in that region even though it isn't a national holiday.
What's the best day to start a fast secured loan?
Early in the working week. Starting on a Monday or Tuesday leaves room for a valuation, lawyers and settlement before the weekend.
